FAQs
I hope these answers help with any questions you may have. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, please don’t hesitate to email me at harriet@harrietparkertherapy.co.uk.
How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
If what you have read here resonates with you, or leaves you curious to find out more, that is a helpful first step. An initial session will give you a better sense of how it feels to talk with me and whether you think we could work well together.
What should I do if I'd like to take the next step?
Beginning therapy can feel daunting, especially if it is new to you and you are unsure what to expect.
You are welcome to arrange an initial 50-minute session, in-person or online, for the initial session fee of £50. This gives us time to discuss what has led you to consider therapy, what you are hoping for and whether working together is the right fit.
I am happy to answer any questions by email before you book. If you would prefer to speak, I can also arrange a free 15-minute introductory telephone call.
What happens in our first session?
Our first session is an opportunity for us to meet and begin exploring what has brought you to therapy, what you might be hoping for and whether working together feels right.
You don't need to prepare anything or know exactly what you want to say. I'll ask some questions to help us get started, and you'll have an opportunity to ask anything you'd like to know about therapy or how I work.
There's no obligation to continue after this session.
How much do sessions cost?
My fee is £100 for each 50-minute psychotherapy session.
I offer an initial 50-minute session for £50, in person or online. This gives us time to explore what brings you to therapy, discuss what you’re hoping for and see whether working together feels right. There is no obligation to continue.
Payment is by bank transfer in advance of the session, or by cash at the appointment.
How often do sessions take place?
Sessions usually take place weekly, at the same agreed time each week. This regularity provides continuity and allows our work to develop.
Where do sessions take place?
I offer in-person sessions from two central London locations:
Marylebone: 4 Manchester Square, W1U 3PD, six minutes' walk from Bond Street station.
City of London: 28 Queen Street, EC4R 1BB, six minutes' walk from Bank and two minutes' walk from Cannon Street stations.
Do you offer online or telephone therapy?
Yes. Sessions are available online via Zoom, or by telephone if you prefer.
How long does therapy last?
There is no set length, as this will depend on what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain from it. At the beginning, we will discuss what you would like help with and what we might work towards together. We can return to this as the therapy develops, reflecting on what is changing and whether our work continues to feel useful.
I usually work on an open-ended basis, which means that we do not decide in advance how many sessions there will be. However, we can also agree a set number of sessions if that feels more suitable.
When do I sign a therapy agreement, and what does it contain?
If we decide to continue working together following the initial session, I will ask you to sign a therapy agreement. This sets out the practical and professional basis of our work, including the agreed time and frequency of sessions, fees, cancellations, confidentiality and the ethical framework within which I practise.
Will our sessions be confidential?
Yes. What you share with me is treated as strictly confidential. I discuss my work in regular professional supervision, as required by the BACP, but identifying information is kept to a minimum.
There are limited circumstances in which I may need to share information, including certain legal requirements or serious concerns about safety. Wherever possible and appropriate, I would aim to discuss this with you first. The limits of confidentiality are explained fully in our therapy agreement.
How is your work regulated?
I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), registration number 421181. My practice is guided by BACP's Ethical Framework, and I undertake regular clinical supervision and continuing professional development to support safe, thoughtful and responsible practice.
Are you professionally insured?
Yes. I hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance with Holistic Insurance Services.
Will I have to pay if I cancel a session?
Please let me know by email at least 48 hours in advance if you need to cancel or rearrange a session. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours' notice are charged at the full fee.
If you need to cancel at short notice because of illness or work commitments, I may be able to offer an alternative appointment within the same week, subject to availability and finding a mutually convenient time.
Can I contact you between sessions?
Contact between sessions is generally limited to practical matters, such as arranging or changing appointments, rather than therapeutic support by email. If you are going through a particularly difficult period, we can discuss whether an additional session would be helpful, subject to availability.
How will I know when it is time to end?
You may feel that you have addressed what brought you to therapy, or simply begin to wonder whether it is time to stop. You can always raise this with me without fearing judgement or causing offence.
Open communication about ending is a valuable part of therapy. It allows us to reflect on our work, make the most of our remaining time and bring the process to a thoughtful close.
What should I do if I need urgent help?
I am not able to provide an emergency or 24-hour crisis service. If you need urgent mental health support between sessions, you can contact NHS 111. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 999 or go to your nearest A&E.
You can also call Samaritans free on 116 123, at any time of the day or night, if you need someone to talk to.
